The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Psalm 18:2 (ESV)
Steps on Your Journey to Know God More Intimately:
- A shield is something we deliberately take up to protect ourselves. Magane is the Hebrew word meaning a protector, a defense and a buckler.
- From what do you need God’s protection?
- God is our Shield, but in Ephesians 6:10-18, we are told to put on the full armor of God, including taking up the shield of faith. Why do we need to take up our shield if God is our shield? Ask the Lord to show you.
- Think about this: Each piece of the armor is recognition of who God is and who we are in Jesus Christ. Each piece points back to Him and what He has done for us. When we take up the shield of faith we are recognizing the promises of God. The enemy’s fiery darts can’t penetrate the promises of God. Letting Him be our shield requires an act of faith.
- Think about how God is your shield. What does that look like?
- Consider what you do to seek God’s protection when you need it.
- Thank God that He is your shield against all attacks.
- Write Psalm 18:2 on a card and put it where you’ll see it often. I’d encourage you to begin to memorize it. Click the following link for ideas on how to memorize Scripture.
A Prayer for You:
My Shield, thank You for protecting me from anything that may harm me. Help me to trust You to be my shield, rather than feeling like I have to always take care of myself. Increase my faith in Your promises so I can effectively hold the shield of faith for Your glory
