I will set him securely on high, because he knows My Name.

Finding Protection in God’s Word in Psalm 91:14

• In the last devotion, we looked at the first part of this verse: “Because he has set his love on me, I will deliver him.” This verse tells us we need to do two things: set our love on God and know His name. Which is more difficult for you and why?
• Look at these translations of the last half of this verse.
• “I will set him [securely] on high, because he knows My name [he confidently trusts and relies on Me, knowing I will never abandon him, no, never]” (AMP).
• “Because he knows my name, I will protect him” (CJB).
• “I will protect those who trust in my name” (NLT).
• We need to know and trust God’s name.
• Name in Hebrew is shem, which includes all the authority, character and honor of the person named.
• I like the way the Amplified Bible translates this: “He confidently trusts and relies on Me, knowing I will never abandon him, no, never.” Do you know God and His name well enough that you can trust Him confidently and rely on Him, knowing He will never abandon you? If you do know God’s name like this, how does that impact your life? If you don’t, what might you need to do to grow to know God more intimately?
• It took me years to learn to trust God enough to know His love and care for me, and I know I have more to learn. When my son Daniel was dying[1], I started my first list of God’s names. As I praised God with His names, my problems seemed to shrink in comparison with how great God is. I now have well over 2500 names! We have such an amazing God.
• God’s name represents all that He is, that’s why He has so many different names, because there are so many different facets of who He is. Look at a few of God’s names; the Appendix has a longer list.[2]
• God is:
• God of power, love and self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:7 NLT)
• God of compassion and mercy (Psalm 86:15 NLT)
• God of justice (Isaiah 30:18 ESV)
• God of peace (Romans 16:20 ESV)
• God of all grace (1 Peter 5:10 CSB)
• Spirit of wisdom and revelation (Ephesians 1:17 NIV)
• God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3 NASB)
• God of hope (Romans 15:13 ESV)
• The way, the truth and the life (John 14:6 ESV)
• What does Proverbs 18:10 (AMPC) add? “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the [consistently] righteous man [upright and in right standing with God] runs into it and is safe, high [above evil] and strong.” Based on the Hebrew, this verse could also be translated “The name and character of Adonai is a majestic, praise-filled castle. The righteous rush to guard and defend it, setting it on high.”
• What does Psalm 9:10 (AMPC) add? “They who know Your name [who have experience and acquaintance with Your mercy] will lean on and confidently put their trust in You, for You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek (inquire of and for) You [on the authority of God’s Word and the right of their necessity].”
• Many people misuse God’s name, using it as a swear word. How do you respond to that?
• What are your favorite names of God? Why?
• God promised to set us on high if we know His name. The word for set on high is shagab, also meaning to be lofty, inaccessible, safe, strong and exalted. God puts us in a place where we are inaccessible to the enemy, a place where we will be safe, strong and defended. I’m so grateful that we can trust God to put us in the right place and to protect us. What about you?
• What does Ephesians 1:20–21 (ESV) say to you? God raised Christ “from the dead, and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the one to come.” When Christ was raised from the dead, He was seated on high far above all demonic and human powers, above every name in the past, present and future. He was and is set on high. Nothing can harm Him in the heavenly places.
• Ephesians 2:6 (ESV) adds: God “raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” Wow! Psalm 91 says that He sets us on high, but now we are seated with Christ above all powers and authorities. Because we are seated with Him, the evil one can’t touch us, so long as we stay in that place with Him.
• God will set us securely on high. Psalm 91:1, 9 talks about making the Most High our dwelling place. Are we set on high to be close to the Most High?
• What are you doing to learn and understand God’s names? If you aren’t doing anything, ask God what He may want you to do. Consider starting a list of the names of God.
• Do you feel like you are set on high with Christ? Why or why not?

A Prayer for You

Yeshua, would You make this truth more real to me today? You did all the work, taking my sins and dying, but I get to enjoy all the benefits. I died with You, and Abba raised me up to sit in the heavenly places with You. Because I’m seated with You, I am above all rule, authority, power and dominion now and in the future. I want to know and trust Your name more and learn how to find refuge in Your name. I want to be quick to rush to guard and defend Your name, especially if I see or hear people putting You down or taking Your name in vain. Show me how to do that in every situation. I also want to be quick to run into the protection of Your name, learning to live continually in the shadow of the Most High. Thank You that You will protect me and set me on high because I know Your name.

An Affirmation to Make Based on Psalm 91:14

Lord, You said You will protect those who trust in Your name. I am learning to know and trust Your name more and more.

Pray Psalm 91.
