Here is a devotional taken from my newest book, The Surprising Joy of Discovering How God Sees You: A Daily Adventure with Your Identity in Christ
I Am Not Condemned
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:1 ESV
Steps on Your Journey to Discover How God Sees You:
Romans 6 and 7 talk about our sin nature. I encourage you to read those chapters because they lead up to this verse.
We were sinners before we met Christ, but we died to sin. Sin is part of our old nature. When you were a sinner, you were under condemnation by the law. Now that you died with Christ and were raised with Him, He took your sin and punishment. Now there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. If you are not sure if you are in Christ Jesus, it’s easy. You just have to trust Jesus to save you and forgive your sins. Then you are in Christ.
So often believers say “I am a sinner saved by grace.” The emphasis is on being a sinner. Yes that is true, but that is not who you are anymore. Jesus paid your penalty. Stop seeing yourself as a sinner and start seeing yourself as a saint. What do sinners do? They sin. What do saints do? They live godly lives. Do you see the difference?
That is what happened to you already. You are free from condemnation. God looks at you, no longer as a sinner, but as a free person, because you are in Christ, His Son. You need to start seeing yourself in the same way God sees you.
Speak out this truth right now: “I am not condemned.”
A Prayer for You:
Jesus, thank You for taking my sins and shame on Yourself and making me free from condemnation. Open my mind and heart to be able to really understand this truth and live it out in my daily life. I want to live my life to please You rather than myself.
