Psalm 91:13 NKJV

You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,

the young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

Finding Protection in God’s Word in Psalm 91:13

  • The Passion Translation says, “You’ll even walk unharmed among the fiercest powers of darkness, trampling every one of them beneath your feet!”
  • Why do you think the psalmist mentioned lions and snakes two ways? He also uses tread and trample, both with interchangeable meanings. The word for cobra means a venomous serpent and the word for serpent also means dragon or sea monster. Often in the psalms, something is mentioned twice and said slightly differently to emphasize a point. What might the psalmist be emphasizing here?
  • I don’t fully understand what this means, but I do believe that God will give us the ability to trample on enemies in both the natural and the spiritual realms. Ask Him to show you anything that you need to trample underfoot. Do you need courage from Him to do this? If so, ask Him.
  • Lions can be loud and bold. Serpents slither along quietly and can remain unseen until they attack. This verse comes right after the verses about the angels being available to help. I believe that the angels can strengthen us, give us boldness and help us to tread on the enemy, even when the evil one may appear bigger and stronger than we are. Angels can also reveal when demonic attacks come against us.
  • In Luke 10:19 (TLV) Jesus says, “I have given you authority to trample upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”
  • What does this say to you?
  • Over what did Jesus give us authority?
  • Are there any ways Satan has more power over us than we have over him?
  • Notice Jesus said our authority is over all the power of the enemy. What can harm you?
  • Do you really believe these truths? Or does it feel like the evil one has the power to trample you? Talk to God about how you’re feeling and ask Him to help you walk in the authority He gave you.
  • In the semidarkness of a friend’s garage, I stepped on what I thought was a rope. Once I turned on the light, I looked at the “rope” and discovered it was a snake about a foot long. I had crushed its head—under my foot. The next morning, I jerked awake hearing God say very distinctly, “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet” (Romans 16:20 ESV). I don’t know if it was in a dream or audible; I just know it woke me from a deep sleep. I had been going through major warfare against the evil one for weeks. Wow! What a prophetic picture! God crushed the snake under my feet without me even knowing.
  • What does Romans 16:20 (CJB) say to you? “God, the source of shalom,[1] will soon crush the Adversary under your feet.”
  • It’s interesting that the name of God Paul used here is “God of peace,” rather than the God of justice or vengeance. I wouldn’t expect God’s quality of peace to crush Satan. Also, God crushes Satan under your feet, not under His feet. Contemplate these truths, asking God what He wants you to know from them.
  • How have you seen God do this for you? If you haven’t, ask God to crush Satan. Or ask Him to show you when He has done it, even though you may not have recognized it.
  • When have you trampled on lions or snakes in the natural or the spiritual realm?
  • How does this verse challenge or encourage you today?
  • What is God saying to you through this verse?

A Prayer for You

God of peace, I choose to keep my eyes focused on You and what You’re doing. I want to see how You help me trample on anything that may try to come against me. Would You make me more aware of Satan’s schemes against me, my family and others in my sphere of influence? Jesus, thank You for the authority You gave me to trample on all the power of the enemy. I choose not to fear anything that may come against me. I know that You are with me; therefore I have Your authority over the natural realm and the spiritual realm. The evil one’s power is not as great as the authority You gave me. Teach me to use Your authority in greater ways.

An Affirmation to Make Based on Psalm 91:13

I will trample upon lions and snakes; I will crush fierce lions and serpents under my feet—in the natural and the spiritual!
