Psalm 91:14a NKJV

Because he has set his love on Me, I will deliver him.

Finding Protection in God’s Word in Psalm 91:14

In this devotion and the next one we will look at verse 14. Here’s the entire verse in the Tree of Life Version: “Because he has devoted his love to Me, I will deliver him. I will set him securely on high, because he knows My Name.”
Look at other translations of the first part of this verse:
“Here is what the Lord has spoken to me: ‘Because you have delighted in me as my great lover, I will greatly protect you’” (TPT).
“The Lord says, ‘I will rescue those who love me’” (NLT).
“Because he set his love on Me, therefore I will save him” (AMP).
This verse has two things we must do:
Set our love on God.
Know His name. (We will look at this in the next devotion.)
and two things God will do:
Deliver and rescue us.
Set us securely on high. (We will look at this in the next devotion.)
Because he has set his love on me.God takes care of us because of our love for Him. The rest of the promises in this psalm are based on our loving God.
Look at these other translations of this section, asking yourself which speak to you most and why.
“He holds fast to me in love” (ESV).
“He loves me” (CJB).
“He hath set his longing upon Me” (OJB).
“If you’ll hold onto me for dear life” (MSG).
“He has his heart set on me” (CSB).
“He is lovingly devoted to me” (HCSB).
What do the following verses say to you?
Matthew 22:37–38 (ESV): [Jesus said,] “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.”
John 21:15 (NLT): “After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’ ‘Yes, Lord,’ Peter replied, ‘you know I love you.’ ‘Then feed my lambs,’ Jesus told him.” The second and third times Jesus asked Peter if he loves him, He said to take care of His sheep. Jesus used different words in Greek. He wanted Peter to take care of the young believers, lambs, as well as the older believers, sheep.
John 14:15 (NLT): “If you love me, obey my commandments.”[1]
Consider the progression of our love, asking God what He wants to say to you through each:
God loves us. We need to understand how much He loves us and how He has shown that love. What ways has God demonstrated His love for you?
We devote our love to God. We choose to spend significant, intimate time with Him. Part of my loving God is being the kind of person He wants me to be and doing what brings Him joy, delight and happiness. Ask God to show you how He wants you to love Him.
We love others. “We love, because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19 TLV). Because God loves us, we have the ability to love others. It’s out of our love for God that love for others will flow.
The more we know and understand God’s love, the more we can trust Him. Ask Him to help you know His love in greater ways so you can love Him more and trust Him more.
In recent years I’ve been seeking to know and understand God’s love in greater ways. Because I felt “abandoned” as a child (to a boarding school for eight years, other than vacations), I struggled with believing God really loved me. Subconsciously, I wondered when He would abandon me. Then I encountered more difficult circumstances, such as my son’s sickness and death, a difficult marriage, my fiancé being killed just before our wedding, and more. These made me believe God really didn’t love me.
What, if anything, has caused you to question God’s love for you? If you don’t feel His love for you, take time to ask Him to reveal how much He really loves you.
God will deliver those who love Him.

This Hebrew word for deliver is palat, also meaning to rescue, to cause escape and to carry away safely.
What do the following verses say about God’s deliverance?
Romans 10:13 (ESV) quotes Joel 2:32: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” The word saved is my favorite Greek word, sozo, meaning save, heal, deliver, rescue and preserve. When the New Testament talks about Jesus saving us, it uses this word, with so much richer meaning than just salvation from hell. How do you need God to sozo you today?
Psalm 32:7 (AMPC): “You are a hiding place for me; You, Lord, preserve me from trouble, You surround me with songs and shouts of deliverance.”
In what ways do you show your love for God? How might you love Him more? If you aren’t sure, ask Him.
How have you seen God save, deliver or rescue you? How do you need God to do these?
What is God saying to you through this verse?

A Prayer for You

Lord, thank You for Your promise to deliver and rescue me when I love You. I trust You to deliver me from any evil attacks. Would You show me how You want me to love You and any areas I need to grow in my love for You? I’m so grateful that You love me whether or not I act like I deserve it. Teach me to love others as You love me. I especially need to know how You love people when they don’t deserve it. Please reveal more of what it means to devote my love to You, God. Would You show me what is on Your heart? I want my heartbeat to be in tune with Yours; I want my steps to be in sync with Yours.

An Affirmation to Make Based on Psalm 91:14

Thank You, Lord that You said You will rescue those who love You. I’m learning how to love You more, Lord.
