Promise: God gives us wisdom generously

promise wisdomIf any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

James 1:5 NIV

Steps on your journey to understand God’s promises:

  • Condition that must be met: Ask for wisdom, believing God will give it
  • “A simple distinction between wisdom and knowledge: knowledge is having information about a subject; wisdom is knowing how to correctly apply that information in a given situation.
  • What do these names of God say to you about Him?

Christ Jesus, Who Became to Us Wisdom from God (1 Corinthians 1:30 ESV)

Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding (Isaiah 11:2 NIV)

Christ, the Wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24 NIV)

  • This promise says that if we lack wisdom, all we need to do is ask God for it. What do you need wisdom for today?
  • What do these verses add?

James 3:17 (MSG): “Real wisdom, God’s wisdom, begins with a holy life and is characterized by getting along with others. It is gentle and reasonable, overflowing with mercy and blessings, not hot one day and cold the next, not two-faced.””

James 5:6-8 (NIV): “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.  That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.  Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.”

  • Do you really believe God can and will give you wisdom when you ask Him? If not, what is holding you back? Talk to the Lord about that.

A Prayer for You

Thank you, Lord, that you say if I need wisdom, I just need to ask you for it and I know you’ll give it to me. You are the God, who gives generously to all without finding fault. I need your wisdom in so many areas of my life. (Tell God what you need His wisdom for today.) Increase my faith, Lord, to really believe that whenever I ask you for wisdom, I will be confident that you will answer.
